Quick answer
A wool sweater can lose its shape in the wash, so check its care label before you choose a method. Machine wash only if the label permits it; follow any hand-wash or professional-cleaning instruction as written. For a washable knit, use detergent made for wool, press out water gently, then dry the sweater flat in the shade.
Read the care label first
The fiber name alone doesn’t tell you how to wash a finished sweater. Check the label inside the garment before filling a basin or loading the machine. If it’s hard to read, take a clear photo while the label is dry; look up the exact style if you need help identifying its instructions.

UNIQLO India’s knitwear guide shows why the label matters: its examples include a machine-washable extra-fine merino V-neck, a hand-wash lambswool tunic and a dry-clean-only cashmere crewneck. Those are instructions for the examples in that guide, not blanket rules for every merino, lambswool or cashmere sweater. If your garment says dry clean, use that route rather than trying a home wash.
If the label allows machine washing
Turn the sweater inside out or put it in a laundry bag, add wool detergent and select the wool cycle, following the garment’s temperature limit. Woolmark suggests a cold or delicates cycle if your machine doesn’t have a wool program. Check the machine’s program and the label before starting; don’t assume that a setting called “delicates” matches every sweater’s instructions.
Wash it with items that share its care requirements. A laundry bag can help protect a sweater during a permitted machine wash, but it doesn’t make a hand-wash-only garment machine washable.
If the label calls for hand washing
Use clean, lukewarm water and wool detergent. Woolmark’s hand-wash sequence calls for a 10-minute soak, a thorough lukewarm rinse and a final cold rinse. Follow the sweater maker’s directions if they specify a different method, including no soaking.
Support the knit as you wash it. UNIQLO’s guide suggests folding the garment and gently pressing it in the water, then changing the water to rinse. Avoid pulling a sleeve or lifting the whole sweater by one section while it’s wet. Set out a towel before you drain the basin so you can transfer the sweater with support.
Choose a detergent intended for wool and follow the bottle’s dosing directions. Woolmark recommends a neutral, mild wool detergent and advises against heavy-duty or enzyme-containing detergents and bleach. A familiar laundry liquid isn’t automatically suitable just because it works for other clothes.
Press out water gently
After rinsing, press out excess water instead of wringing the sweater. Patagonia gives cold-wash guidance for its merino-blend garments and warns that wringing can stretch or warp the fabric; check your own sweater’s label for its washing instructions.
UNIQLO recommends wrapping the knit in a towel and gently squeezing. Lay out the towel first, then move the sweater with its shape supported. Use gentle pressure to remove water; twisting the knit like a cleaning cloth can pull it out of shape.
Dry flat, away from direct heat
Lay the sweater on a pale or white, lint-free towel and arrange it in its intended shape. Smooth unnecessary folds and keep it out of direct sunlight. Woolmark also suggests a garment-drying mesh screen. Use a surface large enough to support the body and sleeves so no wet sections hang over the edge.
Don’t hang a wet sweater from its shoulders: Woolmark explains that the weight of the moisture can lengthen a knit and leave shoulder humps. Keep it away from direct heat, including radiators. Machine-wash permission doesn’t automatically mean tumble-dry permission, so check the label before using a dryer.
If an unsuitable wash has left the sweater much smaller and densely felted, avoid stretching it harder. Woolmark distinguishes severe felting from ordinary shape distortion and notes that severe felting may not be recoverable. Ask the maker or a textile-care professional about options for that garment.
